Frequently asked questions

Straight answers about permanent makeup, healing and booking at Essence.

Does permanent makeup hurt?

Most people describe it as light pressure, scratching or a mild vibration rather than sharp pain, but everyone's comfort level is different and some areas, like the lips, are more sensitive than others. We talk through comfort options at your consultation so you know what to expect before anything begins. Numbing cream is applied before all procedures for your comfort!

How long does permanent makeup last?

It depends on the service, your skin, your lifestyle and how well you care for it. Permanent makeup is designed to last a long time, but it fades gradually, and most clients refresh their color every so often to keep it looking its best. About 3-5 years is when clients often come in for a refresh. Sun exposure, skin type and skincare products with strong exfoliating ingredients can make it fade sooner.

What does the healing process look like?

Expect the area to look slightly darker, bolder and a little tender for the first few days, then to flake lightly as it heals. Color often looks softer or lighter once the skin has settled, which is normal. The full result is usually clear after about four to six weeks. Our healing guide walks through each stage.

Will I need a touch-up?

Many clients benefit from a follow-up visit after the first session has healed, because skin heals differently from person to person and a second pass can even out color and fill any light spots. All services include touchup session in price, and your artist will explain to you how necessary a second session may be for you.

How should I prepare for my appointment?

Come with a clean, makeup-free treatment area, avoid sun exposure on the area beforehand, and follow the preparation tips in our prep and aftercare guide. Please tell us about any medications and health conditions, and complete your health and consent form before you arrive.

Who should wait or check with a doctor first?

People who are pregnant or breastfeeding, have an active skin condition or infection in the treatment area, are undergoing chemotherapy or radiation, take certain medications such as isotretinoin, or have a bleeding or immune condition may need to wait or get their doctor's approval first. Tell us about your health history and we will advise you honestly. Clients must also be 18 or older.

How much does it cost?

Pricing for each service is listed on our services page. Where a price says “from,” your final quote is set at your consultation based on the work needed.

Do you take a deposit?

We may ask for a deposit to hold your appointment time. If one is needed, we will let you know when you request your appointment, and it is applied to your service.

How do I book?

Send us an appointment request and pick an open day and time. We review each request and confirm by email or text. You can also call or text 434-922-0389.

What if I need to reschedule or cancel?

Please let us know as early as you can by replying to your confirmation email or calling 434-922-0389. Giving notice lets us offer your time to someone else.

Can you fix permanent makeup that someone else did?

Often, yes. We offer emergency services within 48 hrs of service, regular saline PMU removal and pigment color correction for brows, lips and liner that healed in an unwanted shade or shape. We will look at your results at a consultation and tell you what is realistic.

Do you offer anything beyond brows, lips and liner?

Yes. We offer restorative work including scar camouflage, stretch mark camouflage, areola pigmentation and scalp micropigmentation, as well as sunkissed freckles and beauty marks.

Where are you located and when are you open?

We are at 3633 Old Forest Road in Lynchburg, Virginia 24501. Hours are Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday, 11am to 7pm. We are closed Wednesday and Sunday.

I am not sure which service is right for me.

That is very common. Choose “Not sure yet” on the request form and we will help you decide, or call us. A consultation is the best way to match the right technique and shade to your features. Facial harmony and balancing is a top priority!
